Garde Manger – Montreal – November 2019

While on a quick foray to Quebec’s beautiful Eastern Townships in November, we had a chance to stop over in Montreal and visited the popular Garde Manger restaurant. The first thing I will say is that this place is tricky to find, but once you do, you’re in for a real treat!

The product of Iron Chef winner and Chopped Canada judge, Executive Chef Chuck Hughes and Chef de Cuisine Chris Merrick, Garde Manger is the sister restaurant to Le Bremner and part of the Crown Salts lineup. Although you won’t find this on any Top 100 list (although I’m not sure why), Garde Manger has been an Old Montreal mainstay since opening in 2006.

This place is pure energy! Loud, bustling, and eclectic, we couldn’t help but be sucked in by the vibe. Upon entering, you are immediately struck by the colourful decor, fantastic open kitchen with raw bar, and the massive chandelier – all surrounded by a cool classic rock playlist. I can easily say that this was one of the coolest restaurant experiences we’ve had in Montreal, ranking right up there with the likes of Liverpool House in terms of atmosphere, service, and food quality.

Best of all, the food was incredibly good, the service like old friends that you haven’t seen in a while, and the cocktails and wine pairing perfectly on point. We had reserved bar seats and could not recommend this more. For one, you get more face time with the servers, and secondly this arrangement lends itself to a more immersive experience, resulting in casual conversations with fellow diners and even more tips on where to dine out next!

Although a “chefs menu” was available, we decided to go with a number of different share plates which ended up being an excellent choice. First up was an exquisite seafood platter complete with a selection of fresh oysters from Atlantic Canada, razor clams, and scallop crudo with caviar. I hate to admit it, but this was the first time I’d tried freshly grated horseradish with oysters and it was life changing!

From there, things only got better. Following recommendations from our amazing server, our other choices included: porketta croquettes with mustard and dill pickle; brussel sprouts with Jerusalem artichokes, bacon, and dijon vinagrette; scallops with onion soubise, cauliflower, and pinenut gremolata; and halibut with chesnut gnocchi, maitake mushrooms, and fried garlic. Each of these dishes was perfectly prepared and offered up unique and delicious blends of flavours and crunch. Each dish was proudly served and explained by an incredibly knowledgeable and attentive staff.

If you are looking for a quiet, romantic dinner for two – don’t go here. But if you’re looking for a memorable foodie experience, this place should be at the top of your list.

P.S. Be sure to look for the pink neon sign…
