In putting together my list of Essential Kitchen Tools my thoughts turned to some of the next level chef tools that I have in my kitchen. These tend to be “specialty” items that serve very specific purposes, but without which I would be deprived of the ability to take my cooking to the next level.
Things like pasta makers, sous vide machines, and hand-held smokers will seem like overkill to most, but they can be essential for delivering a knock out punch in the kitchen. My list includes:
- Pasta maker – hand-turned, counter clip-on. Simple, effective (and really old school)
- Meat grinder – although a bit on the pricey side, I invested in a meat grinder/sausage maker attachment for my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. It works like a charm
- Mandolin
- Hand-held smoker – I have the “Smoking Gun” from Breville. It’s great for adding finishing touches to smaller dishes
- Sous vide precision cooker – a lot of new brands have come on the market in the last couple of years, but I went with an Anova
- Spice grinder
- Deep fryer – takes fried food to another level. I have a Cuisinart and although a bit small, it’s fast, safe, and effective
- Gas or electric smoker – for my bigger smoking jobs I have a Masterbuilt digital electric. It was very affordable and does everything I need it do
- Vacuum sealer – Anova again – great for sous vide, but also for saving/freezing raw meats and vegetables
- Ice cream maker – I use the Cuisinart 2-quart. Makes delicious homemade ice cream, sorbet, and gelato
Next up is a list of must-have pantry items that no aspiring chef should be without. Stay tuned!
