Essential Kitchen Tools

Knives

I wanted to share some thoughts on what I consider the essential tools that every home cook (or wannabe chef) should have in their kitchen. To many, these may seem obvious, but without them even the most basic recipes could prove difficult.

I have to be honest that it took me some time to refine this list to try to keep it to ten, so here we go:

  1. Stand mixer – I have a Kitchen Aid classic and it’s absolutely amazing. Virtually indestructible and a huge variety of attachments (I also have the meat grinder/sausage maker kit)
  2. Cast iron Dutch/French oven – you don’t need to pay $400 – $500 for this. I use an $80 pot from HomeSense and it’s fantastic
  3. Quality knife set (with sharpener) – again, no need to pay huge dollars for these, but a quality, sharp knife is key. I use the Kyu knives from Richardson Sheffield
  4. Grater / zester – an absolute must. Especially the mirco…
  5. Citrus press – any old kind will do – just make sure you have one, or you’ll be using your hands
  6. Immersion blender – an absolute key for soups and sauces – again, I have a Kitchen Aid
  7. Wooden spoon – enough said (get two if you have the time)
  8. Food processor – a huge time saver in the kitchen. I use a Cuisinart which does the trick
  9. Decent frying pans – again, get more than one! I use the T-Fal Air Grip, which always seem to be on sale
  10. Measuring cups and spoons – as many as you can, seriously, I could have 12 and it wouldn’t be enough

I plan to put together another list of specialty tools that will surely bring you to the next level of “chefery”. Until then, happy cooking chefs!
