Voted as Ottawa’s top restaurant according to the Canada’s Best Restaurant list for 2020 (#26 on the list), Riviera is a restaurant that we’ve had at the top of our “must visit” list for some time now. As with most, previous plans to reserve were put on hold during the pandemic, but we were extremely happy to book a table now that things are returning to normal.
Although we didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the touted interior dinning space due to COVID-19 restrictions, the bustling atmosphere on the outdoor patio proved to be both energetic and inviting. We had perfect weather for our evening and were able to enjoy beautiful views of historic Sparks Street (North America’s first pedestrian promenade) and the National War Memorial from our seat.
Inspired
Even faced with a reduced menu, the selections presented by Chef Jordan Holley were unique and inspired. Our evening began with a trio of shareable appetizers, including a delicious roasted carrots with Dukka and smoked yogurt dish. It was light and perfectly balanced and it set the tone for the rest of the evening. This was followed by an equally tasty tuna crudo with puffed quinoa, chili (adding just the right amount of heat), tomato, and Argan oil. This was undoubtedly our favourite dish of the evening and it’s safe to say that we’d go back just to have this one all over again!
Then, it was decision time – go straight to entrĂ©es or order another appetizer. In an effort to maximize our exposure to the amazing menu we went with a third appetizer and selected the mushrooms on toast. This is somewhat of a Riviera trademark dish and we weren’t disappointed. You would think “mushrooms on toast, that’s pretty simple”, but this plate was anything but. From the beautifully toasted, thick-cut bread, to the crispy, yet soft assortment of mushrooms, to the perfectly cooked egg, and shaved black truffle, this dish went beyond our expectations and is a definite must have.
Our next choice was a shared main course. Our preferred options included either a striploin steak frites or a grilled Fogo Island cod. We ultimately went with the lighter fare – the cod – and couldn’t have been happier. Paired with fresh peas with mint, along with some extremely satisfying fingerling potatoes, the dish was light and packed with delicious flavour. Bravo!
To finish the night we ordered the seasonal ice cream bar (which I’m assuming is only available during the summer). The evening we were there featured a white chocolate and fresh strawberry combination that was a perfect end to a great meal.
We’re definitely planning to go back once the main restaurant re-opens and are excited to try some of the selections that we couldn’t fit in (e.g. the massive seafood platter, oysters with mignonette, horseradish and lemon, and beef tartare with truffle and potato chips) – just hope the menu doesn’t change before we return.
