Smoked Guacamole

The smokey flavour and slightly chunky texture of this new Smoked Guacamole recipe is amazing! Although I don’t make this recipe often, it’s one of those super easy, fresh, and healthy side dishes that I find myself craving from time to time.
Sure, there are probably a thousand different guacamole recipes out there (all of which are slightly different), but this one will easily find it’s way onto your “go to” recipe list.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados smashed
  • 1/2 cup shallots minced
  • 1 tomato diced
  • 3 tbsp fresh cilantro trimmed + torn
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lime juice + zest
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp Ancho chili or Chipotle spice
  • 1 tsp olive oil

Equipment

  • potato masher (or fork)
  • wooden spoon
  • microplane
  • citrus juicer
  • hand smoker with smoking chips
  • medium mixing bowl
  • plastic wrap
  • measuring cups and spoons

Method

Mise en Place
  1. Assemble equipment. Peel and core avocado, dice shallot and tomato, trim and tear cilantro, peel and mince garlic, juice and zest lime, measure and separate all ingredients.
Cooking + Assembly
  1. Mash prepared avocado in a medium mixing bowl until the desire texture is achieved.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir well to combine. Taste test and adjust lime and salt accordingly.
  3. Cover guacamole with plastic wrap or a smoking dome and apply a light smoke. Leave mixture covered for 5-10 minutes then transfer to a non-metal serving bowl and refrigerate until needed.

Notes

  • I prefer a fairly smooth texture for my guacamole, but you can choose a light mash to achieve an even chunkier feel.
  • If you don’t have one, similar results can be achieved by adding a few drops of liquid smoke to the guacamole.
  • Fresh guacamole is best served immediately after completion.
  • I like to use hickory chips for the smoke in this recipe, but other woods will work just as well.
